The Apostolate of the Consoling Sisters in Kenya

“In the heart of His ‘Consoling Sister,’ Jesus makes the mysterious invitation heard over and over again: ‘Help Me! Make Me known. Make Me loved.’” — Padre Basilio Rosati, Founder

These words of our beloved Founder, Padre Basilio Rosati, express perfectly what we truly hear in our hearts continually, as we see souls dying of thirst all around us—souls that are eager to learn the Truth, to know of our Blessed Savior and of His love for us, and that are just longing for heaven.

Called to Work in His Vineyard

Divine Providence has called us to work in His vineyard at Holy Cross School in Kenya, where we have three years of kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, and high school.

We teach several classes of catechism, as well as art, sewing, and music. Being in such close contact with so many students of various ages, we are able to see this thirst through their questions and desires.

“Sister, I want to receive Holy Communion so much,” cried a child of seven.

“That is very good, but do you know who you will be receiving?”

“Yes, Jesus.”

“And who is Jesus?” asked the Sister.

“God.”

And the Sister encouraged the child, saying, “Very good. Keep praying for this intention and ask Our Lady to help you.”

The child replied with a smile, “I will do that. Thank you, ‘Seesta.’”

Our Daily Work

Outside of the classrooms, one can often hear the whirl of a machine or the shelling of peanuts, as we help run a little peanut business with the girls. This gives us a bit of financial aid for the school and Church projects.

We know that Saint Joseph will help us with the rest.

Sometimes we visit the school in the slums just “next door,” which is run by one of our faithful. For now, it has only four classes—that is, the three kindergarten classes and first grade—and there are already over sixty students!

“Kuja — Come On”

The apostolate during the weekend is mostly dedicated to the poor children of the area. They come to assist at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which is followed by catechism classes. Afterward, we provide them with a meal, and when we have finished the recitation of the Rosary, they play various games.

Twice a month, we go with them to the slums.

As we walk through them, the children call out to the others in Swahili:

“Kuja! — Come on! We are going to the field for catechism and to play.”

Slowly the band grows, and by the time we reach our destination, sometimes we arrive with a hundred children.

They all play together and then divide into large groups for the open-air catechism class, followed by a snack.

Captivated by the stories of the saints and the truths of the Faith, it is beautiful to see how they change when they discover God’s love for them.

“How was your first catechism lesson?”

“It was nice. I liked it,” the child nearly always responds.

The Sister, ardent for the salvation of his soul, replies: “If you want, you can come to Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday for more lessons.”

“I will. It seems very interesting.”

Quenching Their Thirst

The Sacred Heart is slowly pulling these souls towards Him and is quenching their thirst with His Divine love.

Our Most Important Apostolate

However, our most important apostolate certainly consists in prayer.

Not only do we pray for priests, and for those who have asked us, or with whom we have come directly in contact, but we pray especially to our Infant King, that He may bless all of those dear souls who assist us, both spiritually and financially, as we try to promote His reign everywhere!
